Rushden Echo, 15th July 1921, transcribed by Kay Collins

Higham Ferrers
A GARDEN PARTY, arranged as a Wesleyan Circuit Rally, was held in the grounds of “Bron Dinas" by kind permission of Ald. T. Patenall, J.P., and Mrs Patenall, M.B.E., Mayor and Mayoress of Higham Ferrers, on Saturday last, the weather being ideal for such an event. There was a good company present for tea. The following ladies presided at the tables: Mesdames W. A. Pack, A. Flawn, J. Randall, H. Granger, W. Middleton, A. Lines, Haddon, J. W. Pearson, J. Webb, J. S. Newell, and Sharp, and Misses Pasilow and G. Shortland. The Wesleyan Silver Prize Band, conducted by Mr. W. Harris, played selections while tea was being partaken of, aad also entertained those present with selections prior to the meeting. The Rev. J. G. Davies, of Rhodesia, formerly of the Higham Circuit, was the speaker, and after the Rev. C. Borman's introduction, Mr. Davies gave a very interesting address on "His work at home and abroad." The Rushden Park-road Wesleyan Church Choir conducted by Mr. A. E. Bates, gave an able rendering of "Excelsior." Miss Rose Peck was pianist. On the proposition of Mr. Borman, the Rev. J. G. Davies was heartily thanked for his splendid address. Thanks were also accorded to all who had helped in any way, especial mention being made of the Band, also of the Rushden Wesleyan Choir, and Mr. and Mrs. Patenall for the use of their grounds. A collection was made for the Circuit funds. The Rev. J, G. Davies preached at the Wesleyan Church, Higham Ferrers, on Sunday, good congregations assembling.

A PLEASANT SIGHT!—The fine display of Ladies' and Gent's Boots and Shoes at Colton's new retail shop 68, High Street, Higham Ferrers.
ST. MARY'S Sunday school festival was held on Sunday, the special preacher being the Rev. Fred Richardson, Vicar of Cudworth, Yorks., a former curate of Higham Ferrers. Holy communion was celebrated at 6.30 and 7.30, and matins at 11 a.m. A flower service was held in the afternoon, the children taking gifts of flowers, fruit and eggs to the chancel (to be given to the sick and poor). An address was given by the Rev. F. Richardson, who also preached to a good congregation in the evening. Mr. Richardson, in order the better to understand the life of the coal miners in his parish, himself worked in a pit for a month, and the experience he gained then has served him in good stead. The collections amounted to over £23.
A WHIST DRIVE was held last night on the lawn of the W.M.C. for the Tannery F. C. There was a fair attendance. Mr. E. H. Pridmore was M.C. Winners: Ladies, 1 Mrs. Dunkley, 2 Miss K. Eaton, 3 Mrs. Clarke; gentlemen, 1 Mr. Mitchell, 2 Mr, Burnell, 3 Mr. Pettit. Refreshments were provided.

The Lifeboat, which is being taken to the various towns and villages in the county to support an appeal for £10,000 to provide an up-to-date motor lifeboat to be called the “Northamptonshire” passed through Higham Ferrers on Tuesday. Being hauled on to the Market Square, it attracted considerable notice. Collections were made towards the appeal.

The Lifeboat flag-day in Rushden realised £46 14s. 2d. The scholars in all the Rushden Council schools have written accounts of the Rushden Lifeboat Day celebrations. Eight prizes, two for each school, have been given by members of the committee for the best reports, and the teachers will adjudicate, the awards to be made at the meeting in the Royal Theatre on Sunday evening.
