Thomas Sanders was baptised at Higham Ferrers in 1827, son of William, a currier, and Catherine. After learning the trade from his father, Thomas also traded as a currier at Higham Ferrers, and in 1847 he married Ann Shelton, daughter of Thomas, butcher, and Martha.
At first they lived at Spring Gardens, but soon moved to Wood Street.
In 1882 Thomas built a fine new warehouse, having lost the old premises in a fire. He took an active role in borough affairs, and was one of the Alderman.
Thomas was Mayor of the Borough in 1896 and again in 1902, when he addressed the assembled townspeople on the occasion of the Coronation of King Edward VII and Queen Alexandra, and he also presented medals to commemorate the event. He died in 1905, Ann having died the previous year.
