In 1906 Jabez Cowley was living at 17 Queen Street. He took over the shop at 17 Church Street in about 1910, formerly Matthew Bates.

Advertising plate above the shop doorway is for artifical teeth by a Wellingborough company. Also a fire hydrant notice "FH-9ft".

John Smith enlisted in WWI and was taken prisoner in 1915.
He survived the war, and was demobbed on 7th April 1919 into the Reserve.
On 2nd August 1919 John was married at the Independent Wesleyan Church to Elsie Harriet Cowley (born 14th Jan 1893) , daughter of Jabez Cowley.
