George Hall - draper
George Hall and John Hall

George Hall was born at Hardingstone, and came to Rushden about 1887 as an Estate Agent
with his wife Sarah A (born Dudley WOR), and son George aged 11 (born Hardingston), two
daughters Daisy 9 and Alice 8 both born at Northampton, and John aged 6 born at Earls Barton.

In 1901 the family had moved to Higham Ferrers, and George was a builder and decorator, Alice was a pupil teacher and George jun a draper’s assistant, and John a draper’s apprentice. Daughter Margaret A seems to be of the age of Daisy so perhaps the same girl, is a draper’s cashier.

A shop at Rushden was established by 1906, at 126 High Street, and by 1928 had moved to 60 High Street, Rushden. They also had a lock-up shop at Higham Ferrers where a fire in 1912 destroyed much of the stock.

The advert (right) is from a 1921 recipe book by the Higham Girls' Guild, and tells us they had been esablished for 20 years so in 1901.

Notice

Re G. and J. Hall of High Street, Rushden, Northants.

We, George Hall and John Hall, Northants, hitherto trading in Co-partnership under the style of title of G. and J. Hall, in High Street, Rushden, Northants, regret to have to inform you that, in view of the persistent illness of John Hall aforesaid we decided to bring such partnership to an end; and that as from 17th March 1950, the business has been carried on by George Hall aforesaid, as sole proprietor and under the same firm name. George Hall assumed responsibility for all liabilities of the said firm. It is hoped that all business relationships will continue as usual.

From the notice above it seems they stayed at the Rushden shop until 1950, but there are no entries in the directories until 1928 when they were at 60 High Street.
