RUSHDEN'S new fire station has brought a blaze of glory for its Burton Latimer builders.
The station has been commended by the Brick Development Association in the organisation's 1986 Structural Brickwork Awards. The commendation is for the standard of brickwork.
It was officially opened in October, 1985 and cost £900,000. Builders were A P Lewis and Sons Ltd, an old established family business. In the past 12 months the firm has built an extension to Redwell Junior School in Wellingborough and is presently working on new group practice premises in School Lane, Kettering, alterations to the pathology department at Northampton General Hospital, and dwellings for the Broadway Trust at Kettering. Construction of industrial units on Telford Way Industrial Estate, Kettering, is planned for next year.
The redundant fire station in Newton Road, Rushden, could become a footwear warehouse. East Northants planning committee decided to make no objections to the scheme but is recommending the building is used for storage purposes and not extend to retail sales, which could increase traffic congestion in the street.
