The Rushden Fosse Football Club

Improved Finances – The Season’s Record

Last night the annual meeting of the Rushden Fosse Football Club was held at the Queen Victoria Hotel. Mr. W. Holley presided, supported by the secretary (Mr. E. Moss) and the treasurer (Mr. H. Penness). There were also present Messrs. T. Ellis, H. Sinfield, H. Parker, A. Knight, H. Groome, E. Richardson, R. Ablett, G. Greaves, J. Bennett, and others.

The treasurer presented the financial report, which was more satisfactory that that of the previous year. Amongst the receipts were:- Gates £40/12/8, reserve fund £4/1/1, donations and subscriptions £2/4/9. Vice-presidents’ subscriptions £1/14/0, collections for Allebone and Owen £2, claims £4/7/9, prize draw £5/7/7. This was £9/3/2 better than last year, and, with other receipts, totaled £64/17/5.

The expenditure included traveling expenses £32/8/8, referees £6/4/10, printing, etc. £3/18/5, entrance to League £3/6/4, balance in hand 12/1.

The report was adopted.

The Record

The Secretary presented a report which showed that the past season had opened well, a decided improvement on the previous season, and was maintained throughout both in playing and from a financial point of view. There was a change in the office of secretary, Mr. E. Moss succeeding Mr. J. Pennis in December. In the League they had fulfilled all the matches. They had played 24, drawn three, won six, and lost 15, total points 15. A most gratifying feature was the success in the senior cup. They went right through the competition but lost in the final to Desborough at Desborough. It was rather unusual not to play the final on neutral ground.

The Reserve team in the Wellingborough League had commenced the season well, being top but one for practically the first half of the season. They finished half-way up, but were knocked out of the Junior Cup by Peterborough Westwood by a score which was no disgrace to them considering their strength. They lost 5-3.

The chief bugbear of the past season had been the ground. In spite of the endeavours of the committee they were unable to make good their ground. They had at last been successful in securing the Rushden Thursday Cricket Ground which was undoubtedly as good a ground as any League team possessed with its splendid pavilion and dressing accommodation etc. It would no doubt be appreciated by other teams. With an improved ground and improved team they hoped to do much better during the coming season than for some time past.

Practically all the players of last season had signed on and they were assured of the services of the brothers Denton and one or two well-known useful local amateurs, thus improving the strength of the team.

The committee for the reserve team was elected en bloc.
