Townswomen’s Guild - fundraising

Julie tests the couch
Evening Telegraph, undated newsclip

Guild is a tonic for doctors

Doctors in Rushden have been presented with a new treatment couch and screen for their medical centre in the town.

The equipment was a gift from St Crispin Townswomen’s Guild and cost £320.

The money was raised at a series of fundraising events in the town including coffee evenings, from a stall, and a jumble sale.

The presentation was made by guild chairman Lily Hawes.

Relaxing... Julie West tests the couch watched by fellow guild members, running clockwise, Ellen Inwood, Audrey Mullis, nurse Ann Eades, Lily Hawes, Mabel Benning and Betty Jones.

The following poems were included in Nene Valley Federation of Townswomen’s Guilds
“an Anthology of Poetry 1976”

“What is T.W.G.”
by O. Byford (Rushden St. Crispin’s T.G.)

T.W.G. is a wonderful association
Where ladies do all manner of creations.
It consists of various groups
With love and friendship embedded in their roots.

Ladies meet with monthly meetings
Welcomed with the warmest greetings.
They have speakers with a wide range of subjects –
Makes one forget all about the budgets.
Those groups have lots of fun
Where a lot of charity work is done.

Social studies, Handicrafts, Drama, Flowers to arrange,
Even wonderful holidays to make a change.
Wear your badge when you travel and you’ll see
You will make friends in any county.
This is my impression of Townswomen’s Guild
May it always build and build.

“Make the best of things”
by O. Byford (Rushden St. Crispin’s T.G.)

So many people grumble “Oh isn’t it cold or isn’t it hot”
And wish they had what other folks have got.
They grumble about work, but they can’t afford to stay at home,
They’re never happy unless they have a good moan.
