Wrestling Back After 20 Years

There was a capacity crowd at the Rushden Windmill Hall last night for a revival of wrestling—after a gap of 20 years.

During a welter-weight bout between Eddie Capelli (Wimbledon) and Red Callaghan (U.S.A.), an empty beer can was flung into the ring from the crowd. This happened at the end of a round and Callaghan picked up a water bottle and brandished it to boos and laughter.

Referee T. D'Orazio declared the result a draw

In the main bout, a heavyweight contest, Bert Assirati (London), British and European champion, beat Eugene Stezycki (Poland) with a knock-out in the third round of a scheduled six-round match.

There was another knock-out success in a light heavy-weight match for Arjit Singh (Punjab) over Flash Edwards (Canada).

In a catch-weight bout, Ron Knight (Hammersmith) beat Bob Anthony (Chelmsford) by two submissions.

Northants Wrestling - Referee dragged across ring

Pandemonium reigned at the end of the wrestling contests at Rushden Windmill Hall last night.

With the crowd on their feet shouting, the referee Joe Dorozio of London was dragged across the ring by his hair.

He had just disqualified Jim Lewis of Manchester and Lewis, incensed at the verdict, grabbed the official.

Lewis's opponent, Frankie Hughes of Sydenham, chased Lewis out of the ring.

In the main event, Ken Joyce (Rushden), European welterweight champion drew with George Kidd (Dundee), world light-weight champion.

Afterwards Kidd challenged Joyce to a net win for £100.

This programme has been annotated with results and Ken won his bout.

Ken was European Champion at this time, so he was defending his title.

programme Mary Cruikshank sent us this copy from "All Star International Wrestling Review" no. 26 but it has no year.

The event advertised on the back, is for July the 2nd which fell on a Saturday in 1960 & 1966.

Ken Joyce, catchweight, is the local man on this advertisement, to be held at Rushden Town Football Club.

Many wrestling bouts were held at the Windmill Club.

Ken and his brother Doug both enjoyed fame in wrestling in the 1960's and 1970's, and they appeared in many of the televised events.

The brothers later started a tyre company called Orbit Tyres, which is still flourishing today, and is still owned by family members.
