Presentation—On leaving the employ of the C.W.S. at Rushden in order to join the Central Machinery Co., who are removing their works from Irthlingborough to Rushden, Mr. Ernest Pack was on Friday last the recipient of a presentation from the staff at the C.W.S. factory. Mr. Ballard made the presentation on behalf of the staff and spoke in eulogistic terms of Mr. Pack’s service. The present consisted of an oak frame clock and a gold fountain pen.

Rushden Echo, 6th September 1912

The C.W.S. employees, with their friends, to the number of about 400, on Saturday last had their annual outing, the clerk of the weather so far repenting from his recent prolonged morose mood as to bestow upon them the almost unlooked-for-favour of a fine day. They left Rushden station at 4.25a.m. for Clacton-on-sea where they arrived about 9.30, the journey having been exceedingly interesting owing to an excellent view of the army manœuvres having been obtained en route. Thanks to the admirable arrangements made by Mr. H. Durham, no hitch occurred throughout the day and the entire party spent a most enjoyable time, participating in the varied attractions provided for visitors at this popular watering place. The return journey was commenced at 9.30p.m. and Rushden was reached about 3.a.m. on Sunday.

An alarming incident occurred in the engine room of the C.W.S. works on Saturday and might easily have been attended with very serious consequences. It appears that about 8.30 am., whilst the engines were running, a terrific explosion took place, and four gas bags were blown to pieces, fragments flying all over the place. Several windows were smashed, but fortunately the engineer, Mr. Booth, was well away from the “line of fire,” and he thus escaped serious injury. The cause of the explosion has not, we understand, been ascertained.

A Pleasing Presentation was made this week to Miss Elsie Travail, who has been employed in the shoeroom at the C.W.S. factory, and who is setting sail for America. Mr. H. Dixon, the foreman of the shoeroom, in asking Miss Travail to accept a manicure set, subscribed for by all in the room, said how sorry they were to lose her. On behalf of all the employees in the room, he wished her bon voyage and every prosperity. He sincerely hoped she would meet with success in the future which lay before her. In accepting the present from the hands of Mr. Dixon, Miss Travail sincerely thanked them all for their beautiful present and the kindly thought which prompted it, and said it would be a happy reminder in days to come of the pleasant relations she had had with them. Miss Travail left Rushden today (Friday) for Liverpool, accompanied by Miss Alice Holmes, her friend, and sails from Liverpool on the Carmenia.

Mr Brown retires
A gold medal, a silver medal and seventeen bars awarded by the Safe Driving Competition Association testify to the driving record of 65-year-old Mr William Brown, 15 Purvis Road, Rushden, who retired this week after 35 years as chauffeur and commercial van driver with Rushden Co-operative Wholesale Society Footwear Works. Friends in the factory gave him a watch.
