We regret to report the death, which took place at his home at 38, Milton-street, Higham Ferrers, on Sunday, of Mr Thomas Carter Woods. Mr Woods passed away after a very lengthy illness, during which he has had the sympathy of his many friends in the town, in his 57th year. For the past 25 years he had resided in Higham Ferrers, where he was a painter and decorator by trade, having established his own business on coming to the town. Before then he lived at Northampton, of which town he was a native. While at the county town, he was actively associated with the “Prince Alfred” Court of the Ancient Order of Foresters, going through the various chairs, while at the time of leaving Northampton, he was a trustee. He remained a member up to the time of his death.
In Higham Ferrers, the Baptist Mission found in him a ready and willing worker, and he had been the Superintendent of the Sunday School ever since its foundation 17 years ago. For 13 years, too, he was organist there, resigning the position some years ago. Mr Woods was a member of the Rushden Park-road Baptist Church, and a member of the Higham Ferrers and Rushden Free Church Council.
Mr Woods identified himself with the Liberal Cause, and while not a platform speaker, did much helpful work behind the scenes. He was vice-chairman of the local Association, and a member of the executive of the Wellingborough Divisional Liberal Association.
A widow, one son (Mr Stanley Woods), and four daughters are bereaved.
The funeral took place on Wednesday afternoon, the Rev T W Gill, of the Rushden Park-road Baptist Church, conducting an impressive service at the Higham Ferrers Wesleyan Church. Two of the deceased’s favourite hymns were sung, namely “How Sweet the name of Jesus sounds” and “Lead us, Heavenly Father, Lead us.” Mr H Gould who was at the organ played “Ave Maria” (Schubert) and “I know that my Redeemer liveth.” In the course of a short address Mr Gill testified to the sterling qualities of Mr Woods, and said how strong he was in the Faith he held. Mr Gill also officiated at the interment at the cemetery.
