Still Hard at Work on 80^th Birthday

Described as “the busiest man on the firm”, Mr. Robert Marriott, the Rushden builder and contractor, was 80 last Monday, and his employees presented him with a full set of equipment for his favourite hobby, fishing.

The son of a builder, Mr. Marriott moved from Wellingborough and set up his own business more than 50 years ago, becoming noted for his ecclesiastical work in many parts of the country. He is well-known as a churchman and has taken an active part in many forms of sport.

Enjoying excellent health, Mr. Marriott still travels extensively in the course of business. He resides in College-street, Higham Ferrers.

To write of Mr. Robert Marriott, who founded the company in 1890, one may do no better than to quote part of a tribute paid to him by that eminent architect, the late Professor Sir Albert Richardson, P.P.R.A. who said of him: "He was a master builder of the calibre of Grimbolds and other famous countrymen. He spared no pains and placed ultimate good before financial gain . . . deep in his make-up was the spirit of Old England and its proven craftsmanship."

Rushden Echo, 31st December 1915, transcribed by Kay Collins Rushden Recruit Mr. John Richard Marriott, third son of Mr. and Mrs. R. Marriott, of Rushden, has enlisted in the King’s Royal Rifles. Mr. and Mrs. Marriott’s second son, 2nd Lieut. R. A. Marriott, of the 4th Northants, is in the Gallipoli Peninsula, and is fit and well.
