The Gas Board opened a showroom for gas appliances at 110 High Street, in 1930. This is where you could pay for gas supplied on account after the meters were replaced.
In the early days many customers had a gas meter into which they had to put coins. This meant they were paying in advance. They couldn't run up a debt, and often when the gas man came to empty the meter, there would be a surplus of money and this would be repaid to the customer.
The showroom became the preferred place to pay a gas bill, using cash, rather than by a direct debit.
