The chairman of the Managers visited and brought with him the Report of HMI Mr W J Hands which is as follows:-
Rushden South End Council School
Mixed Department
As in the case of the Infants Department, the normal working of this school has been adversely affected by the carrying out of extensive structural alterations during the past twelve months.
Under the able direction of the Headmaster, with whom the whole of the staff now work in effective union, the efficiency of the school has been more than maintained and in several important directions the general standard of attainment has improved considerably.
In the lowest class the effects of more skilful teaching in the Infants Department are beginning to make themselves felt and the number of backward scholars in Standards ii and iiib is now relatively small.
A certain amount of weakness in the memorisation of Tables was noticeable in Standards IV and iiia, but the teaching of Arithmetic has proved more successful than in former years. In oral and written tests the children were found to be exceptionally alert and the systematic training which the scholars now receive in rapid calculations has contributed largely to this happy result.
Equally promising in the progress which has been made in English subjects and especially in written Composition. Great pains are taken to see that the children’s exercises are closely corrected, but insufficient stress is laid on the imendation of errors by the scholars themselves in some classes and especially in Std IV where the teacher too often furnishes the correct version herself.
The quality of instruction in History, Geography and Elementary Science which is being given in the upper standards where the children are being trained to make independent notes about what they read and see and to use text books and atlases freely, is deserving of praise.
There is an excellent tone throughout the Department and the successful attempts which are being made to foster a sense of responsibility and a pride of school are points worthy of mention.
The attendance is far from satisfactory. On four occasions only has the weekly percentage reached 90 since the beginning of January, and the persistent irregularity of a section of the scholars in the absence of epidemic sickness makes the work of the teachers unnecessarily difficult.

Note re Freda M Kilby 2nd year PT
On Wednesday the 12th May Miss Kilby asked to be excused the preparation of Full Notes of lessons for the Criticism Lessons she gives before the Head Teacher and at times other members of the school staff; her reason being that the preparation of the notes takes up too much of her time.
The Head Teacher therefore informed Miss Kilby that the drawing up of the notes was a very essential part of her training and as not more than one such lesson per week is asked for the demand upon her time out of school hours could not be regarded as excessive.
On Friday 14th May Miss Kilby was asked to prepare a Criticism Lesson the drawing in colour of a spray of Laburnum Std IV for Wednesday the 19th May but on that date Miss Kilby had not prepared the lesson as desired but brought a note to the Head Teacher of which the following is a copy.
Wymington, Nr Rushden
19th May 1926
Dear Mr Jones
Freda has not had time to prepare a lesson so I hope you will excuse her.
I have definitely decided that she will not take up the teaching profession.
I am calling on you in a day or two to have a little talk.
With kind regards
Yours sincerely

Copy of Report made by H R Sweeting Esq HMI
Mixed Department
This school has fallen somewhat in numbers, and now consists of 5 classes from Standard II upwards.
In spite of the two difficulties of Irregular attendance and the fact that the children come from a district which is less well-to-do than other parts of the town, there is a certain number of children who become sufficiently promising to gain admission to the Secondary and Intermediate Schools, while the work of the senior classes is maintained at a reasonable level.
The written work gives a much better impression in the lower classes than the oral answering, for the children’s speech is often slovenly and indistinct; there is not enough done in these classes to correct bad enunciation. In the two higher classes the answering showed considerable thought and interest by the children and suggested that it was the Teachers’ demand for accuracy in the Composition exercises that had prevented more development of taste and appreciation here. The reading material has been well selected, though it is rather limited in quantity.
Class 4 is being taught by the fourth of a series of supply teachers sent since the end of February, when the permanent teacher left; the work leaves much to be desired, and is deteriorating.
The other teachers do their work with energy and in careful accordance with the scheme for the school. The top class is doing advanced work in Science, History and Geography which shows a sound start for suitable graded courses for all the older children.
The Neddlework in the first and third groups has some merits; in the second group more care, neatness and cleanliness are desirable in both knitting and sewing.
Premises
The Boys’ offices have not yet been removed from their present position close to the school.
A second experiment on part of the Boys’ playground has not been entirely successful.
