The Rushden Echo, 3rd May 1968, transcribed by Jim Hollis
New Head for South End School
St. George’s Day brought decimal coinage to the country but more important for pupils of Rushden South End Junior School was the arrival of their new headmaster, 40-year-old Mr. J. C. P. Hale.
Mr. Hale, who is married with three sons, succeeds Mr. F. Astle who retired at the end of the last term.
A loyal Yorkshire man proud of his home county, Mr. Hale also loves Northamptonshire where he has been for many years and has made many friends. He moves to South End from the deputy-headship of the Rowlett County Primary School in Corby, where he taught for 12 years.
Prior to this he spent five years at a school in the City of Wakefield and was formerly at other schools in the West Riding of Yorkshire. He did his training at St. John’s College, York.
He says that he has devoted his life to primary education, in which he has been concerned since he finished his training. And although now a headmaster he will not give up the actual teaching side of the work, although he adds he will not be able to do as much as before because of administrative duties.
He is at present secretary of the Corby and District branch of the National Union of Teachers, and also secretary of the Corby-Yorkshire Society.
Although still living in Corby at present he hopes soon to move into the Rushden area.
