The Rushden and Higham Ferrers District Gas Company
This Indenture made the eighth day of January One thousand hundred and thirty-four BETWEEN the RUSHDEN AHD HIGHAM DISTRICT GAS COMPANY (hereinafter called "The Company") the first part and ROLAND COX (hereinafter called "The Father") of the second part and HAROLD JAMES COX son of the aforesaid ROLAND COX and now in the employ of the Company (hereinafter called "The Apprentice") of the third part
WITNESSETH as follows
IN consideration of the covenants by the Father and the Apprentice hereinafter contained the Company hereby covenant with the Father and the Apprentice as follows
TO receive the Apprentice into their employ as their apprentice for five years from the first day of January One thousand nine hundred and thirty-four
DURING the said term by the best means they can to teach instruct or cause to be taught and instructed the Apprentice in the trade or business of a Gas-fitter and Main-layer to the best of their knowledge power and ability
TO PAY to the Apprentice (subject as hereinafter appears and except during such periods as he shall be absent from the service of the Company by reason of illness accident or from any other cause) weekly wages as follows
9/- per week during the first year
10/- per week: during the second year
14/- per week during the third year
17/- per week during the fourth year
20/- per week during the fifth and last year of the said term
TO ALLOW the Apprentice the following holidays for which he is to be paid namely Christmas Day Good Friday and all Bank Holidays and one full week as and when convenient to the Company
IN consideration of the premises the Father hereby binds and places the Apprentice and the Apprentice hereby binds and places himself apprentice to and with the Company during the term aforesaid
AND the Father and the Apprentice for the consideration aforesaid hereby severally covenant with the Company that the Apprentice shall diligently and faithfully serve the Company keep their secrets and cheerfully and diligently obey their and their officers' manager's and workmen's lawful commands and shall not do any damage to the Company or see any damage done by others, without informing the officers and managers of the Company thereof and shall not waste or without permission lend the Company's goods and shall not buy or sell without the Company's permission nor absent himself without proper permission from the Company's service but shall in all things behave as a faithful apprentice ought to do and duly account for all the Company's monies and goods entrusted to him
AND that the Father will during the said term provide the Apprentice with suitable clothing medicine medical attendance and all other necessaries during the said term
LASTLYIt is hereby agreed as follows
THAT the aforesaid wages have been fixed and arrived at by treating forty-seven hours per week as the time during which the Apprentice is to work for and serve the Company
NEVERTHELESS if he shall work during any one week less than forty-seven hours his weekly wage may be reduced accordingly
AND THAT IF the Apprentice shall be guilty of disobedience or misconduct towards the Company or their Officers or Manager the Company or their Manager for the time being may dismiss the Apprentice
IN WITNESS HEREOF the Company have caused their Common Seal to be hereunto affixed and the Father and Apprentice have hereunto set their hands and seals the day and year firstly above written.
