Former top cricketer Godfrey Evans has bowled over staff and children at Rushden Hospital’s Colton Ward – with the gift of a picnic umbrella.

Mr Evans, now public relations consultant at the town’s Skew Bridge Ski Club, visited the hospital to meet the patients and present the umbrella.

It was bought with cash raised by club members in a recent raffle for an Easter egg.

“The draw raised about £41 and the club made up the rest of the cash needed.

“We asked staff at the hospital what was needed for the children and they suggested buying the umbrella.

“It will give the youngsters some shade when they are able to go out in the grounds in the summer,” he said.

Mr Evans used to play for Kent and England as wicketkeeper.
