At a meeting of this Council on Wednesday night there were present Messrs. J. Claridge (chairman), J. S. Clipson (vice-chairman), F. Knight, G. Denton, C. Bates, W. H. Wilkins, and W. Bazeley, with the Clerk (Mr. G. S. Mason) and the Surveyor (Mr. W. B. Madin).
Plans, &c., Committee
A meeting of the Plans, Water, Highways, and Lighting Committee was held at the Vestry Hall, on Wednesday, the 26th day of August, 1903, when there were present:- Messrs. John Claridge (chairman), J. S. Clipson, F. Ballard, W. Bazeley, Fred Knight, and W. H. Wilkins.
Plans
were presented by:-
The Co-operative Wholesale Society, Limited, for corrugated iron shed, for storage purposes only, at the rear of their factory in Portland-road and passed.
Messrs. T. Swindall and J. Clark (an amended plan) for a new street to be called Carnegie-street, leading from Wentworth-road to Duck-street and passed.
Public Lighting
The Lighting Sub-committee were requested to consider the provision of additional lamps where required and report to the next meeting.
Midland Railway
The Clerk was instructed to write to the Midland Railway Co. calling attention to the bridge over their line on the Washbrook-road and suggesting that the post and rail fences at the sides should be converted into unclimbable fences to prevent the children trespassing on the line and walking on the wall.
Footpath Obstructions
Attention was called to the obstructions on the footpaths by tradesmen setting out goods and leaving empty crates outside their business premises.
It was resolved to instruct the Inspector to give attention to the matter and report any cases of continuing obstructions to the Committee.
College Street
A letter was received from Mrs. Higgins agreeing to an apportionment of £50 on her property in respect of the making of the upper part of this street.
It was resolved to recommend the Council to now proceed with this part of the street under the Private Street Works Act.
The Surveyor was instructed to obtain tenders for the re-construction of the culvert in the lower portion of the street.
Water Works
The Surveyor was instructed to advertise for tenders for steam coal for pumping stations 2 and 3.
The report was adopted.
Finance, etc., Committee
A meeting of the Finance, Estates, Cemetery, and Sanitary Committee was held at the Vestry Hall, on Wednesday, the 2nd day of September, 1903, when there were present:- Messrs. J. S. Clipson (chairman), J. Claridge, Geo. Denton, A. Mantle, C. Bates, and Tom Swindall.
