The Rushden Echo, Friday May 27, 1898 transcribed Sue Manton

Cycle races:- On Monday evening some cycle races took place on the Bedford Road Rushden. A fourteen miles cycle race, prize value 10s was won by A. Whyman, who beat G. Bettles easily. Another cycle race over the same distance for a £1 prize was won by W. Neal, who defeated H. Gross. In the 120 yards flat race, prize value 10s H. Haines defeated C. Houghton.

CyclingJ. W. Sharp, with 65 yards start, won his heat in the one mile cycle handicap at the Rudge-Whitworth Sports at Coventry on Saturday but failed to get a place in the final.

CyclingA Gell, who formerly resided at Rushden, made an attempt on Monday at Bedford Sports to lower the five miles motor-paced cycle record. He did the five miles in 10 min. 18 secs., which is 25 secs. outside the record. Gell also took second prize in the five miles open bicycle scratch race.

CyclingMr Charles Clark, jun, of Wellingborough Road, at Hinkley sports on Saturday, competed in the half-mile and one mile races, and secured third prize in each event, receiving a cut-glass cruet with six bottles and salad bowl with servers. Mr Clark has only been engaged in racing for about a couple of months, and during that time he has attended five meetings and won six prizes, including three firsts.

The Rushden and District Cycling Association had an enjoyable time last Sunday on their weekly ride. Starting from Rushden at nine o’clock, a halt was made at Turvey. Returning home via Bedford, they arrived at Rushden at one o’clock.

Cycling - For the third time this season Dobbs and Steward, of the Nene Valley Wheelers, carried away between them on Sunday morning all four prizes in an event. On Sunday it was in the first of this season’s 50’s for the Carress Trophy.

Steward won both the first fastest and first handicap awards and Dobbs won both the second prizes. This was the first time that Dobbs had attempted a 50, so his time of 2hours 28 mins. 53 secs. was a good effort.

The club run attracted 17 members, the route taken being Bozeat, Olney, Emberton, Sherington, North Crawley to Cranfield where tea was taken. The return jouney was by way of Lower Shelton, Kempston, Bromham, Stevington, Carlton, Harrold, Hinwick and Irchester.
