The Rushden Echo and Argus, 23rd December, 1932, transcribed by Gill Hollis
Mr. and Mrs. S. Clifton’s Anniversary

Golden Wedding of Rushden Couple

Many congratulations have been received by a well-known and respected Rushden couple, who celebrated their golden wedding on Boxing Day.  They are Mr. and Mrs. S. Clifton, of 43, Victoria-road, Rushden, and they were married at Earls Barton, of which place they are both natives by the Rev. D. T. Knight, in 1882.

They have, however, resided in Rushden throughout the whole of their married life, and of their family of seven, the five surviving also live in the town.

Five of their six sons served in the Great War, and one, John, was reported missing from the Salonica Forces in 1917, and Arthur passed away in 1921 as a result of severe war wounds.  Their surviving children are Messrs. Charles H. Clifton, who is a sidesman at the Rushden Parish Church, W. J. Clifton, H. M. Clifton, and S. J. Clifton, and their daughter is Mrs. Tearle, of Grove-street, Higham Ferrers.

The CliftonsAll Mr. and Mrs. Clifton’s sons are associated with the Parish Church, but Mr. Clifton himself is a worshipper at the Park-road Baptist Church.

Both Mr. and Mrs. Clifton are 75 years of age, but they still carry their years well, and enjoy good health, and Mr. Clifton’s appearance belies his real age.  He told an “Echo and Argus” representative that the remark was recently made to him that he would no doubt soon be getting the old age pension!
