Lived in One House 50 Years
Well-known in Rushden, where they have lived for the greater part of their lives, Mr. and Mrs. A. Martin, of East Grove, celebrated their golden wedding anniversary this weekend.
They were married at St. Mary’s by the Rev. J. R. Blunt on Feb.16th 1898.
Mr. Martin, a native of Raunds, has lived in Rushden for 56 years. He commenced work in the boot trade at the age of 10 when the hours were 6 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Although he has now retired he still does a little shoe repairing “just to keep his hand in”.
A staunch Conservative, Mr. Martin has assisted the local party at elections, and has been a member of the Conservative Club for 50 years.
In his younger days he was a Sunday School teacher at St. Peter’s and still retains his interest in all the church’s activities.
In the first World War he was a special constable from 1914-1919.
Mrs. Martin, formerly Miss R. Ratley, is a native of Haversham, Bucks, but came to Rushden to follow her trade of dressmaking at Course and Hewitt’s, a firm remembered by the older generation of the town. Her chief interests have always been in the home, embroidery taking first place in her hobbies.
Mr. and Mrs. Martin have lived in their East Grove house ever since their wedding day.
Their recipe for a happy married life is: “Do all you can for each other”.
The four bridesmaids and the best man, Mr. A. Bailey, are still living. Mr. Bailey was at one time captain of the old Rushden football team.
A party was held on Saturday in St. Peter’s Room, when about fifty guests were present.
