Rushden Days Recalled
68th Wedding Anniversary of Mr. and Mrs. Turner

Mr. and Mrs. G. R. Turner, of 12 Garnham-road, Gorleston, the oldest married couple in the town, celebrated their 68th wedding anniversary on Wednesday, September 2nd.

Mr. Turner, who used to be registrar of births and deaths in Kennington and at Rushden, is 91 and his wife is 88. Both enjoy good health and are able to get out and about. They were married at Putney Parish Church in 1874 and moved to Gorleston from Rushden in 1924 when Mr. Turner retired.

As a young man, Mr. Turner served in the second Middlesex Volunteers and later had a commission in the Northamptonshire Regiment. At Rushden he was the energetic Second Officer of the Fire Brigade.

Two years ago they evacuated to Leeds but stayed there only nine weeks. “We thought home was the best place.” Mr. Turner said in a reporter, “so we came back. The air raids don’t worry us. It’s no use making a fuss anyway—it won’t do anyone any good or stop a raid, so we just stay quietly in bed.”

Mr. and Mrs. Turner have five children living, two sons and three daughters, four of whom are married.
