Letter from the Ministry of Labour and National Service, dated 4 October 1941.
|
"There is an urgent need to supply the iron ore mines with more men to maintain and increase the output of iron ore which is required for the production of iron and steel needed for the manufacture of munitions. |
"There are no suitable unemployed men available in other parts of the country. |
"By agreement with the Naval, Miliary, and other Authorities and representatives of the Employers and Trade Union, the Ministry of Labour and National Service has decided that from among the Boot and Shoe Operatives who will shortly become liable for Military Service, a number of men should be selected for transfer immediately to fill vacancies in the iron ore mines and quarries. |
"I am to inform you that you have been selected for this work and a formal direction to take up such employment is enclosed. |
"I am to add that the employment you will take up is, at the moment, just as useful a contribution to the national war effort as would be service in the Armed Forces, and you can, therefore, go to the work feeling that you are performing a valuable duty in helping to get the raw materials from which essential munitions and equipment will be made." |
