Henry Hanger was born in Rushden in 1854 and he married Martha (born Moulton). Their son Harry was born at Northampton, before the family settled at 15 South Terrace. Arthur was born in 1892, and the boys followed their father into the shoetrade. Martha died in 1920 aged 68 and was buried in Rushden Cemetery. Arthur Hanger married Elizabeth Rose Sharman, of Riseley, third daughter of Thomas and Elizabeth, in 1913. Elizabeth was a servant in Rushden in 1901 with William S Knight, shoemaker, and his family at 68 Newton Road, and his wife Edith, and their two young daughters. In 1911 Elizabeth Rose was in Twickenham, as servant to Edward Thorne, a dental surgeon. Arthur and Elizabeth Rose had a daughter, Zillah Martha Rose born in 1913, and son Gordon Arthur in 1916. Arthur was called for service in WWI and as Private 20628 joined the 5th Northants Regiment, and disembarked in France on 29th December 1915. At the end of the was he was award 1914-1915 Star Medal, British War Medal and Victory Medal, and was discharged and put onto Reserve List on the 13th February 1919. Their address was 8 South Terrace when Arthur was listed as an absent voter in 1918. Two sons were born after the war; Clifford James in 1920 and Walter Leonard in 1922. Arthur was working for Cunnington Bros. in Crabb Street, and his father, Henry was also living with the family in 1922 aged 70. Arthur died in 1937 aged 45, and was buried in Newton Road Cemetery. The family was living at 91 Westfield Avenue when the children all enlisted in the services for WWII. Zilliah joined the R.A.P.C., Gordon the I.T.C., Cliff the R.A.F.V.R., and Walter the Royal Navy. Arthur and Elizabeth were buried in Rushden Cemetery Grave E1528:
Walter Leonard Hanger was baptised at St Mary’s Church on 4th June 1922. He had been working at Allebone’s when he enlisted into the Royal Navy. He was an Able Seaman and during his service his passes show he had been posted to MV Goldmouth and was also a gunner.
A WWI marlin spike and sail makers palm, were with his kit bag lock, and a small bundle of passes and a small photo of a ship, assumed to be the Goldmouth. Walter had also had shore leave passes whilst in New York in Sept/Oct, and at Halifax in Canada for Christmas 1943. |

In 1947 Walter married Iris B Marks. Walter was buried at Rushden Cemetery on 6th November 2000 aged 79, in Grave W175. |
