Death of Machynlleth Exile

The death occurred suddenly of Mr. David Jones on October 6th, at his home at Great Staughton, Hunts, at the age of 69, after an illness of only two days. Born in Machynlleth, Mr. Jones spent his childhood there and as a lad worked on the railway station bookstall of W. H. Smith. As a young man he worked for the Great Western Railway in several capacities, eventually becoming a driver. He joined the Territorial Army and saw service with the R.W.F. at the Dardanelles and was wounded. He was invalided out of the Army early in 1918. He was directed to shipbuilding at Sunderland after his discharge, and when war was over settled in Northamptonshire, where he had been billeted with the R.W.F. He worked for the Rushden and District Electric Light Company in the engine room, but later became a traveller around Bedfordshire and Huntingdonshire for a motor-tyre firm. Because of his personality and business methods, he was a most popular man. He retired in January this year. Mr. Jones always returned to Wales for his holiday and, in fact, had spent an enjoyable one, touring from Towyn with his wife and friends, only two weeks before his death. He leaves a widow, a son and daughter (of his previous marriage) and four grandchildren. Cremation was at Bedford on Wednesday week.
