That was 60 years ago, and although the shop has long since been pulled down, the couple’s love for one another is as strong as it was on their first meeting.

Last Wednesday the couple, who live at 92 Westfield Avenue, Rushden, celebrated their diamond wedding anniversary.

Taking pride of place among the many cards wishing them many more years of happy marriage was a telegram from the Queen.

Harry drove lorries for much of his working life and, with the help of his father, started a road haulage business in Rushden.

At the time of the Depression Harry left the business, which was taken over by his brother, Arthur.

“I spent some 42 years as a transport driver,” said Harry. “I used to drive almost anything. Time were hard but I was never out of work and that’s something to be thankful for.”

Elizabeth worked as a forewoman at a shoe factory.

The couple held a quiet celebration at their home. “We’re a bit too old for a knees-up now,” said Harry.
