OBITUARY One of the oldest residents and natives of Rushden passed away on Monday in the person of Mr. William Knight, of Ebenezer-terrace, at the ripe old age of 80 years. About seven weeks ago Mr. Knight, owing to a severe attack of bronchitis, was compelled to take to his bed. He rallied from this attack, which, however, left his heart weak, and his advanced age being against any hopes of his recovery he passed peacefully away on Monday morning. His wife, who is 77 years of age, survives him, and he also leaves two sons and one daughter to mourn their loss. The whole of the family, with the exception of Mr. H. Knight (Kettering) were present at the bedside when Mr. Knight passed away. The late Mr. Knight was a wonderfully active man for his age, and continued at his work at Mr. E. Wrighton’s until he was taken ill. He was by way of being an athlete in his time and was a sportsman to the backbone. On one occasion he skated on the Nene from Ditchford to Peterborough and back, and we understand that two years ago, when 78 years of age, he again put on his skates and had a go on the Marsh, which was then frozen. He was also, we understand, an enthusiastic follower of the piscatorial art. The late Mr. Knight was at one time in his Majesty’s army, and we understand was called up for service during the Crimean war. He took a lively interest in the present European crisis and indignantly refused to admit any possibility of England not being the victors.
