Bert & Mabel

At 11.30am on Wednesday morning a large number of relatives and friends attended the Park Road Baptist Church Rushden, for the wedding of Miss Mabel Cook, only daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J. F. Cook, 9, Griffith Street, Rushden and Mr. Herbert Charles (Bert) Swindall, third son of Councillor and Mrs. Tom Swindall, Moor Road Rushden. The uniting of such well-known Rushden families was naturally an event of much local interest.

The bride is a teacher at the Park Road Baptist Sunday School and a member of the church and the bridegroom, whose father is the present chairman of the Urban District Council, is the treasurer and a teacher of the Independent Wesleyan Sunday School and an enthusiastic member of the St. John Ambulance Division.

Miss Nellie Gross, Rushden, and Miss Constance Evans, Higham Ferrers, (friends), attended the bride who was given away by her father; and Mr. Alec Swindall (brother of the bridegroom) was the best man.

The Rev. J. A. Sutherland conducted the service, which included one hymn “O Love divine and golden”. Mr. J. L. Clipson A.R.C.O., played festal music.

Dressed in white georgette, trimmed with beads, with veil and orange blossom, the bride carried a white bouquet. Miss Gross was attired in pale blue crepe-de-chine and Miss Evans in pale mauve crepe-de-chine. Both maids held pink and white carnations and wore diamond initialised brooches, gifts from the bridegroom.

A reception, held in the choir vestry of the Park Road Church, was attended by between 50 and 60 guests. By the 3.30pm train from Wellingborough Mr. and Mrs. Swindall left for a south coast honeymoon, the bride wearing a grey tweed costume and hat to match. On their return they will reside in Station Road, Rushden.
