An interesting note was found inside one of the school books of Rose Higgins who attended Alfred Street School. Her family lived at 59, Duck Street, but sadly Rose passed away in 1916 aged 11. However her school books still remained. [now at Rushden Museum]
The Gardening Teacher used one her book to record seeds bought and the result of the years harvest. Alfred Street gardens were at the rear of Moor Road Infant School.
They also recorded the weather in this garden.
This is a copy of his account for 1916-17. These years were particularly hard times for our Country and it was important that we grew as much food as possible, owing to U-Boats attacking our supplies of food.
