Rose Higgins' 1916 Exercise Books

These exercise books belonged to Rose Higgins, who sadly died in 1916. One has a note added by the garden master for the end of the year as during WWI all space was used for fruit and vegetable growing to feed those at home. The garden was behind Moor Road School. see below

And some examples from the exercise books show the standards of the times.

Rose wrote in her essay above : How I should spend a week in London

When I was going to London I went by the Rushden train and stopped at St Pancras then got out .... at St Pancras Station. I did not know where I was because the station was so funny. I went to a place where we went and had a look round. As soon as I got inside they took my umbrella and jacket away from me. I did not know what they were going to do with them. They told me that they were going to put them up for me while I wanted to go out. They gave me a ticket with a number on it and they put the same number on my umbrella and jacket so that I should not lose them. When I came out I went up the street and Lost my way. I asked a man and he did not know the way.

An interesting note was found inside the school books : The Gardening teacher left a record of seeds bought and the result of the 1916 harvest.

Alfred Street gardens were at the rear of Moor Road Infant School.
